São Tomé and Príncipe is one of the smallest and least visited nations in Africa — two volcanic islands sitting on the equator in the Gulf of Guinea, uninhabited until Portuguese sailors arrived in the late 1400s. What followed was centuries of cacao and coffee plantations, and a Creole culture – Forro, Angolar, Principense – that blends Portuguese, Bantu, and island traditions found nowhere else on the continent.
